ラグ・フッキングとは：

アメリカやカナダで、特にアメリカ北東部やカナダ東海岸で、今盛んに楽しまれているアート＆クラフトです。線画を描いた麻布等の織り穴の下から、長細い短冊状に切ったウール布や毛糸を鈎針で引っ張り上げ、織り穴の表面にループを作り置き貯めて、図柄を完成させる「布ぬりえ」(千津子・造語)です。

（フッキングによって作られた作品を hooked rug = フックト・ラグ、又は フックド・ラグといいます）

 

What is Rug Hooking?.....It is a craft popular in the United States and Canada, especially northeastern US and eastern Canada. Using a hook and narrow strips of wool --both dyed and natural--you pull loops up through the holes of a backing material such as linen to create a texured surface. By changing the colors of the loops, you can express any motif you like. I call it "coloring with fabric".

 

ルーツ：

古くはバイキングの時代からあったとする説や、船乗りが航海の暇つぶしがてら作って港々で売り、土産代に変えたという説、また、故郷で待つ妻への土産にしたという説、ヨーロッパからの移民が生活の必要から編み出したという説など、諸説ありますが、どれも定かではありません。確かなことは、今の形のラグ・フッキングは、移民の多くいたアメリカ東海岸で19世紀の中ごろから盛んになったものの、世界大戦の影響もあって一度廃れかけました。その後、20世紀にパール・マクガウン女史により維持・普及・指導・発展への大いなる尽力がなされ再び盛んになり、さらに美的要素も加わって今に伝えられているということです。 (文責：千津子)

 

Roots.... Some say it began in the viking era; others believe it started with sailors who, long voages, made rugs to sell in port towns or to bring home as gifts for their wives. Another theory is that European immigrants created hooked rugs out of necessity when they settled in the New world. We may never know which story is the true beginning.

What is the certail is that Rug Hooking became widely popular in the United States and Canada by the mid-19th century.  Although its popularity declined during World War years, Rug Hooking experienced a revival in the 20th century thanks to the dedication of Pearl McGown. Through her designing, teaching, organizing, and ongoing development of the art form, she played a major role in preserving Rug Hooking.Her and her legacy annual workshops has trained and continues to raised countless enthusiasts, many of whom went on to become teachers themselves.
